Tonal value - the range of lights and darks we create - is one of the primary elements of drawing we focus on in trying to render the illusion of three-dimensional reality. Drawing with pencil or charcoal usually involves creating the dark values, and relying on the white of the paper to create the lights. But what happens when we use a white medium - like white charcoal, pastel or colored pencil - to build the lightest values we see, and allow the black, brown or gray paper to create the darks?

The result we get is often a heightened sense of the light source and its effect on the people or objects in the scene. Even better, the process of drawing light-on-dark makes our eyes more sensitive to the light itself, and helps our hands get better at describing the subtle changes in illumination.

This four-session intensive boot camp will change the way you see and draw, and help you get better at using the artist’s primary visual tool - tonal value. The class includes demos, discussion and hours of drawing time, plus lots of personal feedback from Charlie. The simple materials list is available at registration or on request.
